Today I am wearing Sartorial by Penhaligan’s.
The list of ingredients is extensive although this men’s
scent itself is fairly straightforward.
If I had to choose three words to describe it I’d use spicy, soapy and
peppery.
I probably don’t do it justice though since this perfume is
another from Bertrand Duchaufour who I think produces the most eclectic of
scents that often border on the weird.
Sartorial is reported to have an ozonic layer, a woody
layer, a honey layer and a metallic layer and if I shut my eyes and use my
imagination then I suppose I can detect a couple of these (I’m trying very
hard) but you know how the brain works with the power of suggestion…..
A concoction of cardamom, black pepper and ginger give me
the wonderful spiciness but then there is a mash-up of violet leaf, beeswax,
lavender, leather, aldehydes, cyclamen, linden blossom, patchouli, cedar and
gurjum woods with oakmoss, tonka, vanilla and amber that I’m not so sure about.
After an hour or so the spiciness has subdued and I’m left
with something sweet and smoky. Bring
back the spiciness, I liked that better!
It’s a cleverly composed perfume and I do get it, but perhaps it is a
little too complex and outrageous for me today.
