Perfume - A Century of Scents by Lizzie Ostrom

As an educator I dread the sore throat / no voice part of a cold.  As a purveyor of gorgeous perfume ingredients I dread even more the part that prevents me from enjoying aromas…and the current cold has just got to that stage.  I cannot smell.

So rather than tell you that I can’t smell what I’m wearing, I thought I’d sneak in a little plug for Lizzie Ostrom’s (aka Odette Toilette) new book, Perfume – A Century of Scents.

The book includes descriptions of a treasure trove of perfumes ranging from the 1900s to 1999.  Some fabulous classics and some lesser known scents all brought to life by Lizzie’s wonderful witty and engaging writing style and her bow-down-to knowledge of all things perfume.

Each perfume is given a tag line – Dior’s Poison is the Pollutant Perfume, Dior’s Diorissimo is the Pedestal Perfume, CK One the Grunge Perfume, Tommy Girl the Preppy Perfume and of course, Chanel No 5 is The Perfume.

Delightfully written, interesting and absorbing from the first word to the end, I absolutely recommend this book to anyone, especially those who enjoy my perfume musings.

I hope my olfactory senses will be back in full working order soon so that normal scent reporting service can be resumed.
