Red Truffle 21 by Jo Loves
Red Truffle 21 - so named as to celebrate the 21st anniversary of the opening of Jo Malone's first fragrance store. Her aim was to mark this momentous occasion with a perfume that was different and unexpected.
When looking at the description that accompanies the perfume we were rather (read extremely) wary! It is described as a beautiful truffle note surrounded by fresh fig (our aroma of the week), bitter citrus and crisp pine. Our only previous experience of a perfume containing 'fungi' was not a good one..... it smelt of mould, and as for anything that is described as containing citrus and pine our thoughts immediately turn to bathroom cleaning agents - not of something we would be spritzing on our pulse points.
However, in the name of all things fragrant we took the plunge and hoped to be proved so wildly wrong we would laugh at ourselves for thinking such a respected perfumier could possibly release something so awful!
Oh how we are laughing..........
This is a beautifully light fragrance that is definitely different and unexpected. It starts out quite bitter and green but gentle - not sour or harsh. It is so far removed from what we thought it would be in our heads we are quite taken aback. Once the citrus top notes have passed and it settles on our skin it's, it's, it's ...totally different. We are having difficulty placing it in a perfume category - so we won't. It's pretty without being girly, bold without being obnoxious, it has such a wonderful dry down and it lasts.
We could never have imagined that those particular individual components would come together to make something so gorgeous - but how fabulous that they do!
