Perfume Thursday - Kouros by Yves Saint Laurent

This week's Perfume Thursday focuses on Kouros, the iconic fragrance for men by Yves Saint Laurent.

Kouros, at its time of release in 1981, was looked upon as different, thanks to its sexy/naughty character. It was rare for a fragrance, at that time, to portray such characteristics, being seen as little daring. Despite this, Kouros' popularity grew and it remains as one of the most classic, masculine scents on the market today.

Kouros opens with an heady, ozonic freshness that completely opens your senses and takes your mind directly to salty waters. Notes such as Artemisia, Bergamot, Coriander and Clary Sage all work with each other excitedly to give it a vibrant, memorable and moreish opening.

It's easy to understand that everything seems to work in harmony with Kouros. The middle notes, made up of a handful of florals, such as Carnation, Jasmine and Orris take on some heavier/more invasive notes, namely Patchouli and Cinnamon and the outcome is beautifully structured adding further to its divine scent.

The creamy dry-down gives Korous a much rounder, more sophisticated and mature finish. Tonka Bean, Honey, Leather, Oakmoss and Vanilla are all included, giving the fragrance layers and layers of scent.

Korous has a personal feel to it and by that we mean: it can have many different effects on people. The 'manly' nature of the perfume can bring forward thoughts about past, present and ideal relationships and it also brings to mind ideas about what masculinity is to an individual. If masculinity to one person is all about sexiness and power, you can bet that ideal is nestled in there, but if for another person masculinity makes them think of protection and comfort, you can bet Kouros will conjure up those feelings too.

Has anyone else tried Kouros? Or has your partner (past/present) worn it? We'd love to know your stories and memories!
