A little while ago a lovely customer sent us a a very rare and old perfume book entitled 'Perfumes, Essentials Oils and Fruit Essences' which was published in 1921. You can imagine how excited we were to step back into the perfume past and to see how things had changed, if at all, and simply learn more about perfume from a different perspective.
The book is fascinating and full of great recipes from the past including Queen Victoria's perfume. To give Perfume Thursday a bit of a twist, we decided to make a perfume from the book and after some thought we decided to create our own version a perfume called Royal Nosegay.
For anyone wondering, a nosegay is a small bunch of flowers, typically one that is sweet-scented, which should give you an indication of what our finished Royal Nosegay perfume smells like.
It includes ambergris and plenty of florals such as jasmine, rose and violet, giving the perfume its overriding powdery note. Other notes included in the perfume are vetiver, civet musk, clove, bergamot and vanilla, the latter also contributing to the powdery element of the perfume. The blend works in harmony together to create a gentle, pretty and flowery perfume that doesn't reveal one ingredient more than the other and after a few hours wear the perfume is still apparent, just slightly subdued with some of the powderiness alleviated..
This perfume is written under the 'Recipes for Handkerchief Perfumes' section of the book which means what it says, these perfumes were designed to be sprayed on a handkerchiefs and placed into top pockets or to be kept with you to smell if you were accosted with a terrible smell (lets not forget this book is from the early 1900's, people weren't as hygienic back then, so this would have been a necessity back then!).
We have plans to make a few more perfumes from this book so keep your eyes peeled.
